Construction was completed in 1998. A 25,000-square-foot addition to the fitness center was completed in summer 2010.
McComas Hall
895 Washington St. SWMcComas Hall houses the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center, Charles W. Schiffert Health Center, and the Department of Recreational Sports. Its facilities include three gymnasium/volleyball courts, a cardio/weight training area, a swimming pool, aerobic studios, a suspended track, locker rooms, and a vending/lounge area. The facility receives more than 300,000 visits per year.
James Douglas McComas
The student health and fitness facility is named for James Douglas McComas, university president from 1988 to 1994. The late president emphasized undergraduate education, kept an open door for students, recruited National Merit Scholars, and personally advised several undergraduates. He established the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Academic Advising Center, encouraged diversity, and promoted public service. His legacy also includes the transformation of the Hotel Roanoke into a major conference center.
