Project-Based Learning

In August 2024, the ÎçÒ¹Ó°Ôº¸£ÀûÉç Innovation Campus will welcome our first cohort of students into a project-based track for the Master of Engineering (MENG) degree program. While students entering the program can still follow the standard coursework track described in the CSA or CPE program, a select group of students will qualify to be part of the first project-based track cohort.

We are looking for students that find excitement in the prospect of learning software engineering and quality software design in the context of a multi-semester project where the ethical implications of design and professionalism skills are interweaved in the pedagogy throughout the experience. Students will be trained by our world-class faculty and technical subject matter experts and leaders from our industry partners. MENG graduates completing these in-depth, industry-led projects will bring advanced skills and experiences into the next phase of their careers.

Curriculum

The project-based track of the MENG degree is designed currently as a 3-course sequence of 6Ìý credit + 6 credit + 3 credit (equaling 15 course credits completed over 3 semesters). At the center of each course is a team project where individuals apply modern software design and team management fundamentals in a collaborative environment. Each team of MEng students is led by our faculty as they tackle challenges sourced from industry, government agencies, non-profits, or from approved student-proposed ideas.

What are the prerequisites?
CS 5040 or equivalent to take CS5925.

What if I already took CS 5024 or CS 5704?Ìý
You can still take this series but since you cannot count both CS 5925 and CS 5024 or CS 5704 you will end up needing 3 (or 6 if you have taken both) credits more than listed for your degree.

What if I decide to stop after the first semester?Ìý
You will receive the 6 credits for CS5925, which are equivalent to CS 5024 or CS 5704.

Team Projects are hard to manage in a way that ensures everyone works the same and gets along. How will this be different?
As part of the curriculum we will teach you how to do this in the first semester, supervise you doing it in the second semester and let you fly in the third.

What kind of companies do you work with?
Some companies we have worked with in the past are Costar, Boeing, US Marines, Torq Robotics, and Northrop Grumman.

What kind of project can we work on?
AI/ML, Data Analysis, Web applications, Quantum, HCI……pretty much anything you can think of!
